Linux Permissions Unraveled: How to Avoid 'chmod 777' and Keep

chmod 777Start by setting permission numbers to 777 to grant files more access, then use the chmod command to modify specific permissions for each folder in var.I'm trying to change the permissions of temp_dir to 777. Why are these commands not accomplishing that? I'm using Linux by the way.
